“Okay, this is where I get off!” Alan said, as he followed Sierra until they reached the same spot on the pass trail from which Alan had climbed down the near vertical slope to retrieve his saddlebags from the fallen horse.

“I’ve got no argument with that,” Sierra agreed, as she swung down out of the saddle. “A half mile or so of walking will be a good change anyway.”

They had been riding for a full day, ever since acquiring the two horses from the Nealy brothers, and now that it was approaching midnight, they’d reached the pass again. Alan knew Sierra was pleased with their progress but wanted to keep going while they had the cover of darkness. They made it past the dangerous part of the trail without incident this time and then crossed the slickrock and finally reached the valley road some three hours later. Sierra was in favor of pushing on until they crossed the main road and reached the trail that would take them west, and Alan agreed.

“We’ll get there by daylight and then I’ll feel better about stopping. The horses will need time to recover, and we will too, but if we make it that far, we won’t have to worry about Kenneth catching up anytime soon, even if he does manage to figure out that we doubled back.”

Alan hoped she was right. He was getting more comfortable with the bigger, stronger bay gelding he was riding now, especially after getting some tips from Sierra the afternoon before, but he was ready to get out of the saddle. It was surreal, this situation he was in, trying to elude a posse of men on horseback bent on hunting him down to kill him. Alan had thought he’d left all that behind when at last he boarded a plane in Kabul to come home from the war just a few months prior. No matter what he saw around him now, he couldn’t change the memories he had of all that, or the perception that such a short time had elapsed when in fact it was more than seventeen years. Everything about his perspective of time was confused. He’d felt like he was moving through a dreamscape ever since he’d discovered the dead man near the cave, and especially since he’d reached that clearcut and found the abandoned bulldozer and the two skeletons. And since his first encounter with Sierra, that waking dream had become a blur of fighting and climbing and riding. He was so exhausted and deprived of sleep it felt as if the two of them had been on the run for weeks, when in reality this was only the third night since they’d taken the three horses from the stable and left. Riding through the night without sleep wasn’t new to him, as Alan had done it just recently (or so it seemed) while crossing the huge state of Texas on his Electra Glide. But those lonely highway miles had been broken up
